NEW TESTAMENT

Romans 1 and 2

Paul served for over 20 years and baptised 1000's.
The letters to Galatians and Rome are used these days for the false doctrine of other churches of works being unessential for salvation.
But the Jews were relying on their works to save them.  This isn't right either.
There's a middle ground.
Paul shows that true faith requires personal righteousness and obedience to gospel principles, a truth overlooked by the 'faith alone' theory.
This letter may have been written in winter AD 57-58 in the end part of his third mission.
This letter was written to the saints who already had a knowledge of the gospel.  So to those who don't, it's really hard to understand.
Spencer Kimball in 'Miracle of Forgiveness' pg 80-86 talks about homosexuality and it's awesome.  I loved reading it.
Romans 2:13 The doers shall be justified.  Paul clearly state that good works are important.

BOOK OF MORMON

Helaman 16

Some believed Samuel and found Nephi and confessed and were baptised.
Others tried to throw stones and shoot arrows at him and couldn't hit him.  More were converted.
This whole time Nephi had been preaching as well.
Others thought it was the power of the devil that stopped them from being able to hit him.
They ran to get him and he jumped off and ran back to his town and was never heard of again.
End of the 86th year.
90th year signs of the prophets started happening.
End of the book of Helaman.

NEW TESTAMENT

2nd Corinthians 11-13

13:1  .....by the mouth of 2 or 3 witnesses shall every word be established.
The second epistle of the Corinth was written from Philippi, a city of Macedonia.
In chapter 12 the man Paul refers to is himself.
I need to bear my trials well, one day I'll understand.
Suffering or 'school of experience' as John Taylor liked to put it.
Why trials?  So we can learn to place our dependance on God and trust Him.

BOOK OF MORMON

Helaman 14

5 more years and then Jesus will come.
There'll be great lights from heaven.  It'll be light all night.  A new star will rise when he's born.  Some will fall to the earth.
Signs of His death will be that the sun, moon and starts will be darkened and there'll be no light for three days until He's risen from the dead.
There'll be thunder and lightnings for hours.  Earthquakes, tempests, mountains made low, valley's made into mountains, cities gone, highways broken up, graves opened and saints appearing to many.
We're free to act.
We're free to choose good or evil.

CONFERENCE

'It is better to look up'  by Elder Carl B Cook

If we can 'look up' to God for help we won't feel overwhelmed with the burdens of life.  We must have the faith to look up and the courage to follow His direction.
Looking u p is a metaphor for remembering Christ.
As we remember Him and trust in His power, we receive strength through His Atonement.
The Lord leads us through prophets and apostles as well as feelings after a heart felt prayer, repentance, keeping the commandments and the Holy Ghost.
We must act upon direction received.

NEW TESTAMENT

2nd Corinthians 1

The Lord may call upon us to bear afflictions and tribulations so that we may become as he desires us to be.
When Titus came and reported to Paul of the people of Corinth, this prompted, as well as Pauls' anxiety for the Corinth church, Paul to write a second letter.
Paul wrote at least 3 letters to the Corinthians.  We lost the first and have the other 2 which are 1st and 2nd Corinthians.

CONFERENCE 2011 October

'Counsel to Youth' by Pres. Boyd K Packer

Satan is determined to disrupt our Heavenly Father's plan and seeks to control the minds and actions of all.
Gender is an essential characteristic and was established in that premortal existence.
All beings who have bodies have power over those who don't.
The voice of the Spirit comes as a feeling rather than a sound..........listen for that voice that is felt rather than heard.
The gift of the Holy Ghost, if you consent, will guide and protect you and even correct your actions.  It is a spiritual voice that comes into the mind as a thought or feeling put into your heart.
The outcome of the 'battle' that began in the premortal life is not in question.  Lucifer will loose.
'Trust in the Lord with all thy heart and lean not unto thine own understanding.'
Proverbs 3:5
I love this verse.  It spoke to me today.

NEW TESTAMENT

1st Corinthians 7-10

Paul talks about marriage.  He probably was married and a widower, because Paul was a Pharisee he would've been married due to the strict Jewish law.

BOOK OF MORMON

Helaman 4

54th year was full of bloodshed.  Rebels moved in with the Lamanites.
56th year more Nephites went to Lamanites to try to start a war.
57th year they did it.
58th year the Lamanites were successful in getting Zarahemla and the Nephites were driven back to Bountiful.
60th year the Nephites fought back and regained many cities.
61st year they gained back 1/2 of their lands.
This all happened because the Nephites were wicked.
Moroniah, Nephi and Lehi set out doing missionary work and the Nephites started to repent.  That's how they got their 1/2 back.

CONFERENCE TALK

Saturday morning 'As we meet again'  President Monson

48 years he's been an apostle.  October 1963 he was called by David O McKay.
There's a new temple being built in the old Provo tabernacle that burned down.  It'll be Provo's second temple to accommodate all the people.
We have a General Temple Patron Assistance Fund to help people go once, who  can't afford it, to the Temple.
I think this is awesome.  I think it's great that we who are rich can help the poorer to get to the Temple at least once so they can be sealed and so forth.
I think it's great that a programme like this has been put fourth so those of us with much can help those with not as much.

DAUGHTERS OF OUR KINGDOM

Chapter 9

There is an art to being a homemaker.  We need to maintain cleanliness and order in our homes.
Mother should create a climate for spiritual and temporal growth in their homes.
Another word for nurturing is homemaking.
Cooking, washing, keeping order.
Home is where woman have the most power and influence; therefore, LDS women should be the best homemakers in the world.
So far I love this chapter.  I think it's great for me to be reading things like this.  So many people think being a homemaker isn't enough yet I know that to Heavenly Father it's the most important.  It's my job to be the protector and the right influence on the home.  I love that this is my job.  Sure it's a lot to have on my shoulders, yet it gives me a sense of pride and purpose to be doing this for my family.  It makes me feel like I'm just as important in this family as anyone else.  That my role has everything to do with how the family does as well as Dru's side of it.  I really feel blessed that Dru supports me in being home with the kids.  He loves me being at home as much as I do.
I appreciate that.
I like that I know my place and I love my place.

NEW TESTAMENT

1Corinthians 4-6
Manual Chapter 35

Paul's 3rd mission was set to order the branches of the church under his care.  In 3 years he went through Taurus mountains, past lakes of Pisidia to Ephesus on Aegean coast ship to Troas and Philippi onto Thessalonia and down the Macedonian Peninsula to Corinth.
He was visited by Abel, Enoch and taught by them.
Corinth had a worldwide reputation in the ancient world for it's immorality.  Located close to two major ports it was subject to many vices.
Corinth was the site of the famous temple of Aphrodite Venus.  1000's of 'preistessess' who were simply prostitutes.
This is why Paul talks so much about being clean.
If we make it in righteousness we're better than Angels who haven't progressed that far yet.

BOOK OF MORMON

Helaman 3

46th year some people left Zarahemla cause they were mad.
Because there wasn't much timber they became great at working with cement.  They planted trees.  Did a lot of shipping of wood to each other.
Journals were passed down amongst Nephites.
Helaman did a great job as judge.  Helaman had 2 sons.  Nephi was the eldest and Lehi was the next.
49th year Gadianton was working his evil but the government didn't know.
1000's joined the church that year.  Even 10's of 1000's.
53rd year Helaman died.  Nephi became the judge and was a righteous judge just like his Dad.

When she was 17 she asked for her present to be baptism into the church.  Her Dad said no.
He forced her to leave home but then his heart softened and she went back home after a week.
Finally she was allowed to be baptized.
Then after three more years of working on her father he was finally baptized and well as he mum, youngest brother, sister and her sister's husband.

DAUGHTERS IN MY KINGDOM

Chapter 9

The creation provided a place where families could live.
The fall provided a way for the family to grow.
The Atonement allows for the family to be sealed together eternally.
The Lord will open a way.  Even when we can't see any possible way.
This means a lot to me right now and really hit home since Dru can't find full time work.
I know I need to trust the Lord and trust that he will help us to find a way, even though I can't really see a way at the moment.
We need to speak wisdom to our kids and avoid fault finding.
I also need to always speak well of Dru infront of the children.
I can do better with fault finding in my kids.  I don't think I'm bad but I'm not 100% and I know I shouldn't.  Sometimes I say 'You're being lazy' and I need to change that kind've talk.
I think I do a good job of always speaking well of Dru to the children.
Sometimes Dru and I have 'words' infront of the kids and we shouldn't.  I need to leave it till they're in bed or work out a way to simply 'talk' about it without getting fired up.
Easier said than done ;)

NEW TESTAMENT

Chapter 34 of the Manual

3 dangers that threaten the church are:
#1 Flattery of prominent men in the world
#2 False educational ideas
#3 Sexual impurity
Paul's 3rd mission was the longest.  Four years and the most distance covered.
Ephesus was the head quarters for 3 of the 4 year mission.  One of his focuses was collecting funds for the poor in Jerusalem.  Women can prophesy, receive visions, entertain angels, enjoy the gifts of the spirit and qualify with their husbands for full exaltation in the highest heaven.
Paul wrote the letters to Corinth around Mar/Apr AD 57.
Truth only comes from the Spirit.

DAUGHTERS IN MY KINGDOM

Chapter 9

"You are the guardians of the hearth.  You are the bearers of the children.  You are they who nurture them and establish within them the habits of their lives.  No other work reaches so close to divinity as does the nurturing of the sons and daughters of God"
"Mothers are the heart and soul of any family"

This really hit home to me as I read this.  Especially the 'Guardian of the Hearth' part.
I sat there and just pondered what that truly means as a mother these days and felt the spirit so strong that I need to be the defender for my children when it comes to our home.
I need to be willing to fight for my children's innocence as well as their purity.
I need to do all I can to give them the kind of guidelines they need to live a faith filled life with a strong sense of self as well as Jesus being their saviour.
I'd like this saying make into a necklace or braclet or some kind've fridge magnet.
Hmmmmmm
I need to get on it.

Manual Section 8

Of the 27 books in the New Testament 14 were written by Paul.
It would seem like he overshadows the other.  But Peter, James and John were the First Presidency and we need to always remember that.
The 'letter' was one of the fastest ways to communicate to the people of the church, with any problems or local needs.
14 letters we have in the New Testament.  Other letters included were written by Peter, James, John and maybe the successor of Pete and Jude.

Epicurean and Stoicism were two different philosophies at the time.  Epicurean was more about man and Stoicism believed in a higher being.

NEW TESTAMENT

Acts 15:36

Paul had a problem with taking John Mark on a mission and there was a little contention.
I think this is funny it is mentioned.

Acts 16

They were forbidden to preach word in Asia by the Holy Ghost.
Paul had a vision that a man in Macedonia needed him.
Lydia was baptized.
Paul and Silas get arrested.
They were whipped and sent to jail.
Then there was an earthquake.
The guard thought they'd escaped and wanted to kill himself but Paul said not to cause they were all still there.
The guard was so grateful and was baptized.
They were let go and visited Lydia and then left the city.

Acts 17

They keep doing missionary work.
Many Greeks believed both men and women.
Jews keep coming and stirring up the people.
There was idol worship going on.
Dionysius and Damanris believed and were baptized.
I don't know why this man and woman were specifically mentioned but I wonder if they did something great later on or something?

BOOK OF MORMON

Alma 55

Moroni was upset at this letter in return to his.  He refused to exchange prisoners.  He started making plans to rescue the Nephite prisoners.
Laman sneaked in with wine to the guards and got them so drunk they passed out.
Moroni went in to the city of Gid and gave all the Nephite prisoners weapons in case the guards woke up at any stage.  Then they surrounded all the Lamanites  and they realized it when they woke up in the morning.
Moroni took them prisoner then next day.
He put the Lamanites to work strengthening the city of Gid.
The Lamanites tried to trap them but it never worked.
Moroni then wants to attack the city of Morianton.
I think Moroni has a slight temper.  I like him.  He's also got the back up of the Lord in whatever he does.
